Downgrades

Dear Faculty Member,
Do you mean the thumbnails that appear when you click to play a recording? Yes, I know. They removed the simple play arrow with the last update and now you click on one of the thumbnails from the story board, or “chapter view”, to start playing it. It’s the 1 step back of almost any software upgrade. Why they want to mess with the basics I don’t know.

We all hope they will return the 1-click play functionality soon.

Regards,

Second Life and Education

Second Life is a Multi-User Virtual Environment (MUVE) which has created quite a stir in the physical world. The Second Life world is built by the residence and has its own striving economy! Here, one can find businesses (IBM; Toyota), malls (clothing, furniture, and animations), clubs (DJ and Live entertainment), meditation (with or without audio) and schools (recruitment, classes and offices). If it can be done in the physical world, it can be done in Second Life. At the time of this writing (Tuesday, July 1, 2008; 3:55 PM), the number of individuals “in world” at the same time is 57,900. Imagine all those avatars (the virtual person behind the physical person) gathering and exchanging ideas!

What's in a Name?

This being my first blog in my role as “AppDev Manager”, I thought I'd take some time to explore the names with which we deal on a daily basis.  I've been asked by more than one person, “What exactly does that mean – 'AppDev'?”  While it might seem obvious to some, it's a shortened version of “Applications Development”.  The AppDev Team is comprised of the folks who have had a hand in developing, maintaining, and keeping some of the College's mission-critical software applications (like AMIS and PeopleSoft) operational.  We also develop and maintain various interfaces between AMIS and other third-party applications, such as Blackboard.
